What are the area trails?

Go to this great site for maps: www.ptbikes.org. Click on “Bike Maps.”

How do I choose my bike?

The first thing is to decide what kind of riding you are going to do: weekend casual, commuting, trails and cross country, road or downhill. Next, you will have to determine what kind of comfort and component quality you will want. We can help with this and let you test ride bikes when you come on in!

Does SB&K repair bikes?

YES…we can usually have them done for you within a couple of days. Summer will be a little longer. Typically, we can’t do repairs on the spot because others are ahead of you. If you are traveling, we really try hard to help you out!

Are parts on any brand of bike fixable or do I have to go to a store that sells that model?

We can fix any bike as long as parts are still available.

How do I know what tire pressure to fill to?

Look at the side of your tire. It will tell you the minimum and maximum tire pressure.

Is it important to have a good fit on the bike?

Absolutely! Bikes are like shoe: one size does not fit all. If your bike is too big or too small, you will be very uncomfortable and not enjoy riding.

Do you sell kids bikes?

Many models and brands including BMX.

My butt hurts when I ride my bike and I get numb. What do I do?

Check the angle of your bike seat. If it is pointed too far up or down, that can be uncomfortable. If it is level, try adjusting it up or down a little and see if that relieves the pressure points.

My bike has been sitting in the garage - why are the tires flat?

Tubes are made to be light in weight. This results in a more porous material that will lose air if left to sit.

How often do I lube my bike and what do I use?

In the wet months, you will want to lube up after most rides. Use a lube that is not an attractant. Bike shops use a dry lube that helps shed dirt and grit and lengthens the life of your components.

What is the advantage of clipless pedals vs. platform pedals?

Clipless pedals allow the rider to use both legs while riding the bike instead of just on leg at a time. This makes it much easier to climb hills and puts less pressure on the tendons in your knees.

Do you sell roof racks?

Yes, we sell the Yakima brand roof racks and accessories.

Do you sell batteries?

We sell only bike computer batteries.

Do we have maintenance clinics?

Yes. We schedule them throughout the year, so watch the newspaper or this web site for the date. You can also give us your contact information so we can notify you.

What are the shop rates for repair?

Our average cost for a tune up is $45.00 to $50.00. If your bike needs more, we will let you know. If it needs less, you will have a lower cost. This only includes labor, not parts.

Do you paint bike frames?

No. We suggest you go to Alderson’s or to Tyler’s.

Why are there so many gears on the bikes?

Depending on the riding you want to do, gears can really help you master the terrain while giving you enough gearing change so that you can go up steep hills and not strain your knees.

What does the drive train of a bike consist of?

Your drive train includes the crank, front derailleur, rear derailleur, cassette, chain and shifters. There are different levels of quality in these parts. The better quality, the smoother the action, the longer it lasts, and the better quality of materials go into the parts so they hold tunes longer and perform with more precision.

What is the difference between an alloy frame, a steel frame and a carbon frame?

An alloy or Steel provides a great smooth ride, but is not as light. Carbon gives the best of both: the lightest frame with the smoothest ride.
What do I need to fix a flat? An adjustable wrench for taking off wheel (if the bike is not equipped with quick-release skewers), three tire levers, a correctly sized tube, a patch kit and a pump or CO2 cartridge.

How do I fix a flat tire?

1. Release the brakes using the brake release mechanism and remove the wheel from the bike. If the flat is on the rear wheel, shift the derailleur and chain all the way to the bottom sprocket. This aids in replacing the rear wheel by putting the chain on the bottom sprocket.
2. Pinch the tire all around its edges the same way you would pinch your nose. This releases the seating surfaces of the tire from the rim.
3. Use the tire lever to pry the edge of the tire out from the rim, working on one side only. Use more than one tire lever if necessary. Hook the end of each lever on a spoke after prying the edge of the tire out of the groove. This will help if the tire is tight on the wheel.
4. Remove the stem of the tube from the rim, and then the rest of the tube. Brush your fingers around the inside of the tire, feeling for any sharp objects. You can also put some air in the tube with your pump to see exactly what made your tire go flat. Make sure that you have determined the cause of the puncture and have removed the problem before putting the new tube in.
5. At this point, patch the tube (using the instructions provided with the patch kit) or use a new tube. The latter is best for emergency road side repair.
6. Inflate the tube with your pump, just enough to give it some shape so all the wrinkles and creases are smoothed out.
7. Put the stem of the tube in the hole of the rim by pulling the edge of the tire back and exposing the stem hole in the rim.
8. Start putting the tube back inside of the tire, working equally from the stem on both sides around the tire.
9. Push the tire back over the edge of the rim from which it came from, again working equally from the stem on both sides around the tire.
10. Using your pump, inflate the tube to the PSI listed on the side of the tire. Reinstall the wheel. Refer to step # 1 for rear wheel replacement. Re-engage the brake and check that it is working well..

How do I know if my rear suspension is set up correctly?

Move the little O-ring to the top of the cylinder. Sit down on the seat - don’t bounce. Get off. If the o-ring has been pushed down more than 1/3 of the length of the cylinder, you need more air in your suspension.

Why won’t my left pedal go on?

Remember, it is a reverse thread. Do not force it or hammer on it. Just thread it on in reverse.
I just replaced my chain but my bike still isn’t shifting well. Why? Often replacing the chain makes it worse. The chain has been worn as has been the cassette and/or the front chain rings. If these are not replaced also, the bike will not shift well. Bring it in so we can check out the components and let you know what will fix it.

Are disc brakes really better?

Yes - disc brakes will effectively stop your bike on any grade in any amount of trail slop. Be careful with that front brake!! Also, as disc brakes do not use pads that compress onto the rim of your wheel, your bike rims will last much longer.

Why is my crank making noise?

It may need tightening. Bring it in so we can tighten it up or troubleshoot for you.

Do you sell roof racks?

How easily do kayaks tip over?

When you move with balance and keep your center of gravity stable, kayaks are very stable. When you make sudden fast, rough movements or lean way over without counter balancing, a kayak will tip right over! Of course, the wider the kayak the more stable it is.

Is there a paddle club I can join?
